Another great blog. We have lived in our house for almost 20 years. Our vegetable gardens (when we have had them) are organic, we do not spray our lawn, we pull noxious weeds from our fields, and do not use chemicals in our flower beds. Nature rewards us. Deer are regular visitors and love the apples that fall from our old apple tree. Free roaming chickens can be the best slug control you have ever encountered. Birds are in abundance including Hairy, Downy and yes the Pileated woodpecker. For 20 years I have stood at my kitchen window and half dozen times each year see the Pileated woodpecker fly his crazy flight swooping up and then down as he flies 1/4 mile from a nearby ridge to some woods next to our property. I love those sightings!

Thank you for sharing your piece on Bhopal. I esp. liked how you incorporated the Bandura material to underline how easy it is to become docile + sit back in the face of fatal carelessness and lack of accountability or responsibility. Your article makes me now want to read more about the incident and subsequent legal activities.

On another note, I was wondering how this disaster was addressed on a human level in a religious culture, vs. how it would have been handled in a secular culture.

Fabulous and thought provoking! I have so often thought of what footprints I have and will leave on this earth. So many generations have shared this same land that suports the growth of our food, our homes. I love seeing their traces through old buildings, rock art... Perhaps our greatest legacy is, despite any footprints we leave behind, to keep the earth livable for our children. Disasters such as Bhopal are tragic on many different levels. The land lays wasted. The factory itself made and distributed chemicals whose need and use were questionable. Once again, thank you for sharing!

Thank you, Nataraj for setting the record straight. I neglected to say that we also drink filtered water at home. The reason is to remove the chemical contaminants caused by chlorination.

I am an old friend of your brother Dave whom I met when I lived in Tucson years ago. I now live in Paris where I have been for the past eleven years. Leaving Tucson opened up my horizons, and increased my "travel flow". India has become a big part of that flow. I have been going every February for the past five years, and have explored a good portion of the subcontinent, with the exception of the north. Reading the account of your arrival in Delhi plunged me back into my past and my own arrival in Delhi in 2005 (although Delhi has undergone a sea change since then). I was surprised to read that you saw few cars. I'm sure you've changed your mind about that after your good night's sleep in the B&B...Delhi has become a car nightmare with its attendant pollution. When I was there last year I thought I would die from the car fumes. Incredible India is always lying deep in my soul, and comes right back up to the surface when I read texts such as yours. I hope your stay there will be rich and enlightening, although I cannot imagine it being otherwise.

Thanks, Adriane. I'm impressed by how well you articulate this complex and important issue. I wonder how many people will take the time to reflect and actually be willing to reconsider their economic choices. One can only hope.

Like your blog and will look forward to future posts. Recently watched a HGTV show of a couple relocating to Bangalore. They were looking at housing...lots of street shots and was fascinating. One house they considered was beautiful but came with a "gardener" and his family whose abode looked like a shed in the backyard. Locals used the vacant lot next door to graze their milk cow kept on a long rope. They led the cow around from spot to spot throughout the neighborhood.
